Finding The Perfect Wedding Gown

The Dress is quite possibly the single most important detail in any girl's mind when it comes to her wedding. In my advice leave this part of the wedding out of the whole "Do It Yourself" mantra. A wedding dress should be special. It is something that every girl has thought about at least once in her life, so here are a few things to keep in mind when dreaming about that white gown.

  • 6% Rule- Generally the bride will spend 6% of her total wedding budget on that perfect dress. This is just a rule of thumb and definitely not mandatory . Finding the best deal possible, especially when it comes to the dress is a great accomplishment and something to brag about for months to come!
  • 4-6 Weeks- It can take some brides over a month just to find that perfect dress. Don't fret, just plan ahead and set aside plenty of time for the search. The best time to shop the bridal shops and department stores are often between Thanksgiving and New Years. That is usually when you will find the best deals.
  • Perfect Fit- Bridal sizing will typically run two to three sizes higher than normal, so don't be discouraged if you can't fit into your regular size 6. Sizes also vary among manufacturers so be sure to get professional measurements taken, especially if you are ordering online. Also, when trying on dresses, be sure to wear undergarments that are similar to what you would wear on your wedding day, along with shoes that are comparable to what you will be wearing with your wedding dress.
  • Something Old- For the nostalgic girl on a budget, go vintage! I love the idea of wearing something sentimental to you as a bride. Wearing grandma's old wedding dress can be a great way to save money and honor the family at the same time. If vintage isn't your thing, there are plenty of ways to get your hands on pre-owned discounted wedding dresses. Online shopping is becoming more popular among modern brides and there are so many avenues to find cheap wedding dresses. Here are some helpful websites to get you started:
  • Online Opportunities- JCrew and Ann Taylor are just two of the retail giants dipping their toe into the wedding pool. They are putting out some great stuff on their websites, everything from wedding dresses to honeymoon attire. They are definitely worth checking out.
Remember: Enjoy the search for your wedding dress, cherish that time with family and friends, and don't forget that this is a once in a lifetime experience!

Simplistically Chic Photography

One of the most important elements of any wedding is how you will capture the moments to last a lifetime. Pictures are the best thing that a couple can take away from the whole wedding experience, which is why I interviewed a young, up and coming photographer with a fresh take on an old standard for any wedding.
Shayna Sherbondy is an amazing freelance photographer with an eye for simplistic beauty and vintage inspiration. Not only is she talented but she is very affordable! Which is a huge plus for anyone planning a DIY wedding. I interviewed Shayna with a few questions and she offered great insight into what makes each wedding a unique experience.

Why are you a photographer?
- I grew up loving art, especially drawing. I took a lot of art classes and filled up a lot of sketch books. Photography is another art form that I fell instantly in love with. The feeling of satisfaction I get when I produce a picture that I love is awesome.

How long have you been taking pictures?
- My sophomore year of high school my dad bought me a digital camera for my birthday. I fell in love with the art of photography, so I saved my money, and I bought my own Cannon Rebel. I've been actively pursuing a career in photography for about 3 years.

How would you describe your photography style?
- It’s hard for me to pinpoint my style... I love simple and natural beauty. Studio photography is definitely not my thing, heavily touched up photos instantly turn me off. Also, I love vintage, I love old fashioned things.

Should the couple tell you exactly what they want as far as style?
- Here is my advice on that, if the photographer you are considering is not your style already, do not hire him/her. Photographers are artists; you cannot guide the work that they will produce. Find a photographer that will fit you as a couple, and you will get great pictures!

How far in advance should a couple book their photographer?
- As soon as possible! There are only so many weekends in a year and those weekends fill up fast. Especially if your wedding is between the months of April and September, the wedding season is short.

What would you suggest a couple wear to their engagement shoot?
- Wear what makes you feel good. Wear clothing that is visually interesting. Wear clothes that are YOU, that fit you as a couple. Do not try to be someone you are not.

What picture combinations are a must have as far as wedding day shots?
- Definitely take time to get pictures with just you and your hunny. You'll always love to look back on them, and it will give you some quiet time together amidst the craziness of the day. Pictures with your best friends, parents, siblings (new siblings included) and your family are a must!

How long after an event will your proofs be ready?
- A minimum of three weeks. Going through photos and editing is a very long process. I obsess over editing until I think they're as perfect as they can possibly be.

What can a couple do to make your job easier?
- Relax. It’s almost impossible to get good photographs from people that I have to direct every move or face they make. Be creative. Shoots produce so much more when clients contribute ideas or props! Contribute things that are special to you as a couple; whether it be ideas, items, or the location.

Summary: Choose the right photographer that is a good fit for you, be yourselves, relax in front of the camera, and be creative! Imaginative locations and/or themes will add so much to the finished product! Personally, I love the action shots. I tell my couples to pretend I'm not there, to interact with each other. Laugh, talk, hug, etc. Natural positions and facial expressions are so much more beautiful than stiff hugs or a fixed smile. If you relax around your photographer your photos will be so much more natural and YOU. Your wedding day will be one of the most memorable days of your life, your photographer is there to capture the awesomeness.

DIY Flowers

Flowers are an essential part of any wedding. They can make the most mundane wedding feel truly romantic, but sometimes romance comes with a high price tag. Flowers can cost upwards of $300 to $2500 depending on the florist. Flowers can be one of the most expensive aspects of your wedding but a little creativity can go a long ways. Paper flowers are a big money saver and they are fairly simple to make.
There are many different kinds of flower tutorials out there but this one is the easiest.
You Need: Paper, Scissors, and Glue

  • Step 1 - Collect pretty paper, card stock, old sheet music, or newspaper for your flowers. Being the business student that I am, I chose the WSJ. You want something fairly stable but also malleable.

  • Step 2- Start cutting flower shapes randomly. They can be small, medium, and large. You will want a variety of sizes so as to give dimension.

  • Step 3- Start to punch pin size holes into the centers of all the shapes.
  • Step 4- Make a stem for your flower. Simply roll a piece of scrap paper to make a base for your flowers. Apply a small dab of glue in order to prevent unraveling.
  • Step 5- FINAL STEP, Layer on your flowers one by one. This is where creativity comes in. Mold your flowers to the best shape possible and apply glue at the base to adhere the layers. Viola! You end up with cute and truly unique flowers.
